  The CSS management techniques of the website are better
Posted by: jackychen - 05-02-2017, 09:30 PM - Forum: Website Management - Replies (1)

Why is CSS management important?

If you are new to CSS, you will probably want to work with CSS like what you want to decorate with CSS. But if you add the CSS without notice, in the long run you will have trouble managing your CSS file, as it may not be properly aligned, duplicated CSS sections that make it difficult when you need it. Revisit your website or upgrade it.

In this article, I will say through some very good CSS management techniques that if you do not know then you should go through it once so you can work better with CSS.
CSS management techniques

1. Use SASS / LESS (CSS Prepocessor)

The CSS preprocessor such as SASS or LESS is one of the tools you should use if you need to work with CSS on a new level.

Because in this tool you can create variables in CSS and use it quickly. For example, if you put a variable called $ color-primary with the value # E8E8E8, you need to use it just call the variable out, avoid rewriting it many times.
-------------------
$primary-color: #E8E8E8;

body {
    color: $primary-color;
}

.post__meta {
    color: $primary-color;
}
--------------------------
It also makes it easy to write CSS for a select group better, using the BEM method (see below):
----------------------
.header {

    &__logo {
        // some CSS
    }
    &__social {
        // some CSS
    }
}

/* It will translate into

.header{}
.header__logo {
    // some CSS
}
.header__social {
    // some CSS
}

*/
------------------------------------
Using CSS preprocessor is easier than you think. If you do not know anything about it, please refer to your SASS Tutorial.
2. Split out different files (should be included with SASS)

One thing Thach likes to do when deploying CSS on a new project is to split the CSS into several files, each containing CSS for each component on the website to avoid inserting too many CSS into one file. It makes it hard for you to work. Because I use SASS, I will create the _name.scss file to contain the individual components, then import it into the main file named style.scss. So when compiling from SASS to CSS, the _name.scss file will not be exported to CSS but will output to style.scss.

Remember that in SASS, files with the name _name.scss will not compile into a CSS file, so do not worry.

Here are some of your favorite patterns:
-------------------------------------
style.scss-The SASS file will be used to import files with the _ character in the name. Then compile into CSS.
_var.scss-File contains variables commonly used in CSS.
_normalize.scss - CSS reset file uses Normalize.
_global.scss - The file contains CSS for the global component of the website, such as html, body, a.

_typography.scss - The file contains CSS to format the text on the website.

_layout.scss - For writing CSS for the layout of the website as dividing columns.
_modules.scss - This file will write CSS for the objects in the website such as buttons, menu decoration, ....

-------------------------------------
And if you have more Responsive you should create more files for each breakpoint like
 _mobile.scss, _tablet.scss and _desktop.scss.
Then in style.scss, I will call them all and do not need to write any CSS here.
--------------------------------------------
@import "var";

@impprt "normalize";
@import "global";
@import "typography";
@import "layout";
@import "modules";

// Responsive
@import "mobile";
@import "tablet";
@import "desktop";
------------------------------------
3.Apply the OOCSS technique

OOCSS stands for Object Oriented CSS - CSS Object Oriented. It sounds funny because Object Oriented Programming is a technique where CSS is not programming. And yet, OOCSS is a CSS-writing technique by dividing objects and reusing them on objects of the same structure. Take a look at the following CSS:
.button-red {

  background: red;
  padding: 5px 10px;
  color: #fff;
  text-decoration: none;
  margin: 0 1em;
}

.button-blue {
  background: blue;
  padding: 5px 10px;
  color: #fff;
  text-decoration: none;
  margin: 0 1em;
}
Do you see that class .button-red and .button-blue have pretty much the same properties? They are just different colors. Instead of rewriting, we can create a class called object that adds the CSS elements needed for a button, and then at the push of a button you can add classes such as. Red, .blue, .green (called attributes) to add color and text color to buttons.

Here are examples of HTML and CSS that use OOCSS.
<a href="#" class="button red">Nút đỏ</a>

<a href="#" class="button blue">Nút xanh</a>
<a href="#" class="button green">Nút xanh lá</a>
The benefit of this technique is that it will help you lighten the CSS file to save load time, ease maintenance later, and easily add CSS to other elements with the same object.
4. Naming with BEM

If you find it difficult to use OOCSS in CSS management, you may want to try out another technique called CSS Element Blockifier (BEM). It is a technique of naming and building a website structure based on a major component.

To use BEM you have to understand it consists of 3 components:

Block - Area of the object to write CSS.
Element - The key element of the Block.
Modifier - The state of elements when they change behavior, or can be used to denote the properties of an element.
For example I will write HTML with BEM structure like this:
<div class="header">

    <img src="logo.png" class="header__logo" />
    <p class="header__description header_description--center" />
</div>
Then I will have CSS styles like this:
/*--[Header]--*/

.header {}
.header__logo {}
.header__description{}
.header__description--center{}
In it, .header is Block, .header__logo and .header__description are Element and .header__description-center is Modifier.

5.Use reasonable class and  ID
Classes and IDs are two common types of selections to use, with similarities in nature, so many are wondering whether to use IDs or Classes. First of all, you must know that Class can be used for many different elements on the same page, and that the ID can only be used for one element on the same page.

As such, you should use Classes for repeating properties and use IDs for single-use elements. However, if you are afraid of puppetry, it is easier to use Class for the whole.

6. Name the optimal selection

A serious mistake that you need to avoid is to name the course selection. For example, I see many of you named this:
.titlepost
.content-post

So you will find quite tangled if you look back to the CSS by yourself. Instead, you should name this type:
.post

.post-title
.post-content
.post-meta
.article
.article-wrapper
.article-content
.header
.header-menu
.header-ads
And when writing CSS with SASS or LESS, I just write this:
.post {

    &-title{}
    &-content{}
    &-meta{}
}
Epilogue

So you have just finished reading some of your experiences in optimizing CSS in your project so that you can be more manageable in deployment as well as maintenance, or at least transfer to someone who works further. They also easily capture the structure. Hopefully with the above sharing, you will find more excitement with work on the interface of the website with CSS that "easy to difficult" is.
